Sherry’s puts heart into soul food
By LUNCH BUNCH
Two can eat out for less than $20
(Correction: The DeLand location of Sherry’s Kitchen and Buffet closed in May. It is scheduled to reopen at a different location later this year.)
Sherry’s Kitchen and Buffet occupies what was once a McDonald’s restaurant along State Road A1A just north of Daytona Beach Shores. Food is still fast, but the diversity is huge, and the cooking homestyle with a touch of soul. Recently, Daytona Beach News-Journal Staff Writer Jeff Farance and a guest ordered the buffet that is the signature offering there.
Q. Describe the place.
Sherry’s bustles any time of day, the crowd’s a cross-section of tourists, locals of various economic stripes, and really hungry people of all persuasions. It still bears some of the decorative touches and the seating configurations of the chain restaurant it once was, including a handy drive-up window.
Q. How was the staff?
Everyone was friendly and helpful, even when trying to handle cash register, busing tables and replenishing the buffet. Even other patrons tend to be welcoming and familial.
Q. What’s generally on the buffet?
We’ve eaten at the Daytona Beach Sherry’s a number of times and always had the buffet, though the menu is enormous and brimming with tempting choices.
Staples on the 25-foot steam table include some of the best fried chicken around, whole fried catfish on Fridays (a pinnacle of fish-frying), tangy, crusty and sharp-cheesy macaroni and cheese, real mashed potatoes and great gravy (though they’ve substituted canned in a crunch), white rice, perfectly cooked and fully flavorful Swiss steak, greens that are good (though surprisingly unspectacular on each of our visits), crisp-moist hushpuppies and sinfully good cornbread, assorted steamed veggies, and very possibly the best meatloaf around (a slightly spicy, lean and luscious, very beefy loaf).
There usually are a couple of soups on the steam table as well.
All that, plus there’s more on the individual-entree menu. And the buffet comes with a salad bar of shredded greens and assorted toppings and dressings.
Choice of beverage is included in the price.
Q. Any dessert?
Soft-serve ice cream, with various toppings available, is included in the buffet price. Other desserts are offered a la carte on the menu.
Q. Would you go back?
We already have, and we plan to break down and try a nonbuffet dinner to sample a few of the other offerings we’ve not found on the steam table.
Q. What was your total tab?
$14.89, plus a $4 tip.
